What this setting demands

The four decisions behind every student housing order

Each one is a line on the drawing and a line on the quote — stated against the code or the rating that puts it there.

Every device is handled by hundreds of residents

Tamper-resistant shutters and a 20A commercial-duty option are the two levers on durability. NEC 406.12 puts dwelling units and student-accommodation style locations inside the TR scope, so TR is the baseline, not the upgrade.

Charging is the number one complaint

A desk with one duplex receptacle becomes a power-strip problem. USB receptacles at 36W or 5.0A high output cover a laptop plus two phones from one yoke, in USB-A, USB-C or dual USB-C.

Dual USB-C36W5.0A

Shared bathrooms multiply GFCI count

Suite and floor bathrooms are the highest-density GFCI areas on the drawing. Self-test devices reduce the maintenance ticket volume that comes from protection nobody tests.

Turnover is annual and total

Every May the same devices get inspected and replaced. One part number for the suite receptacles and one for the plates keeps the replacement kit small.

Installation notes
  • TR shutters are the first line of durability; 20A commercial-duty models are the step up for common areas and corridors.
  • USB outlets are rated for combined output — read the label before you spec, because 15A, 4.8A and 65W are not the same number.
  • Dual USB-C output is a specification, not a cosmetic choice: it decides whether two laptops or two phones can charge at once.
  • Hallways and stairwells are where 3-way and 4-way switches get specified; we stock both in toggle and rocker.
  • Seven finishes let the suite receptacles and plates match one paint schedule across buildings.
Procurement

Campus programs usually buy a standing kit per building or per suite type.

  • Standing kit per suite type: receptacles, USB, GFCI, switches, plates.
  • Mixed container with private label and your own carton marks.
  • Sample units for the facilities sign-off before production.
Purchasing FAQ

Student Housing questions we get before the PO

Are tamper-resistant receptacles required in student housing?

TR requirements follow the location and occupancy in the code provision our catalog cites (NEC 406.12), and dwelling-unit style accommodation sits inside that scope. We state TR status per model so the schedule can be checked against the local amendment.

What USB output is enough for a student desk?

36W and 5.0A high output models cover a laptop plus phones; 20W PD covers phones and tablets. The catalog states combined output per model — 15A, 4.8A and 65W are different numbers and not interchangeable.

Can we standardize one plate across the whole building?

Yes if the openings match: decorator receptacles need T9603, standard duplex needs T9602 and toggle switches need T9601. Choosing the device family first lets one plate order cover the building.

Do you supply the devices for summer turn programs?

Send the suite types and quantities for the turn window and each line is quoted against a real model. Staged delivery has to be confirmed against the production calendar.

Is there a commercial-duty option for common areas?

Yes — 20A receptacles and switches are stocked for high-traffic walls, and 120/277V rocker switches cover commercial lighting circuits.

Send the list, get the package back

Model list, quantities and project type is all we need to start. The quotation comes back in one business day with the specification sheet for each line item, the listing reference it holds and the packing detail for the DC — one document, not four.
