Case pack, carton identity and barcodes, decided before the run

A pack number is not a packing specification. This page states the four levels we build to, the factory defaults by family, and what we need from you before the box goes to print.

Why "10/50" tells your warehouse nothing

The instruction has to name the relationship between the levels, not just two numbers.

  • A purchase order line that reads packing 10/50 lets the factory's packing table know what to build. It does not tell a receiving warehouse whether 10 means devices per inner carton or inner cartons per master carton.
  • A complete instruction names the relationship: one device per individual box, ten individual boxes per inner carton, five inner cartons per master carton, fifty devices per master carton.
  • Every level also needs a commercial role. An individual box can be the sellable unit, an inner carton a replenishment pack, and a master carton either a transport box or an orderable case in your own system.
  • Devices, plug openings, yokes, wall plates and cartons are not the same counting unit. If your system orders by carton, the purchase order has to say cartons.
The four levels

Physical question, commercial question

Both columns belong in the packaging specification. The left one the factory needs; the right one your warehouse needs.

LevelPhysical questionCommercial question
Individual unitWhat is packed with one device? Is it sold or inventoried on its own?
Inner cartonHow many units are grouped together? Can the warehouse replenish by inner carton?
Master cartonHow many units and inners are inside? Is the master carton an orderable case?
Logistic unitWhich cartons move together?Which shipment or receiving record identifies them?

A carton marked only RECEPTACLE does not separate 15A from 20A, or standard from tamper-resistant. The packaging description has to name the exact SKU.

Factory defaults

Our default packs by product family

These are what the four families ship as unless an approved OEM specification says otherwise.

Factory defaults are not limits: individual boxes, inner cartons, master cartons and printed artwork can all be produced to an approved OEM specification. Carton dimensions, gross and net weight and the barcode numbers per model are not published yet — they are on the open list below.

To print your cartons

Four things we need in the file

Artwork approval is the gate. These four arrive together or the print date moves.

Artwork

Print-ready files for the individual box, the inner carton and the master carton, plus the wording your channel requires on each face.

Barcode numbers

The UPC or GTIN to print at each level your system orders by. Where numbers are not assigned yet, tell us which party assigns them so the artwork is not held up.

Carton marks

Model, quantity, quantity language and country-of-origin marking. Country of origin is one line of the carton specification, not the whole of it.

Label levels

Whether your DC requires unit, inner carton and master carton labels separately. Some receiving specifications treat non-conforming inbound cartons as a hold, whatever is inside them.

Origin marking

Country of origin is a marking rule, not a sticker

Three lines that decide where the marking sits on the box.

  • US import marking is governed by 19 U.S.C. §1304 and 19 CFR Part 134: a foreign-origin article, or its container where the container qualifies, has to be marked so the ultimate purchaser can read the origin.
  • A country name on the master carton does not automatically settle marking for the article inside it. The requirement is separate from the packaging hierarchy and from the barcode identity.
  • We show the origin marking on the artwork proof. The wording that satisfies your entry is confirmed with your customs broker before the cartons are printed, not after they land.
Default packs apply to

Four families, four default packs

One model from each family, so the pack table above has a face on it. Carton counts per model are confirmed with the order.

Before you ask

Packing data we do not publish

The pack structure is settled. The per-model numbers behind it are not, and we will not print a carton against a guess.

  • Pack structure ships as stated: unit, inner carton, master carton and logistic unit, with the relationship named in the specification.
  • Private-label boxes, cartons and artwork are produced to the approved OEM specification, and the approval is the gate before print.
  • Barcode integration is part of the private-label documentation set, so the numbers and the levels are checked against the same file.
Packaging FAQ

What receiving and purchasing ask about the carton

What is the case pack on your GFCI and USB models?

One device per individual box, ten devices per inner carton and fifty per master carton, with the wall plate, the screws and the instruction sheet included with each device.

Can we change the case pack?

Yes. Individual boxes, inner cartons, master cartons and printed artwork can be produced to an approved OEM specification. The specification has to name the exact SKU, because the model number is what your receiving system books against.

Do you print UPC barcodes?

Barcode integration is part of the private-label documentation set. Give us the numbers and the level each one belongs to, and they are printed with the artwork. Where numbers are not assigned yet, we confirm the assignment route with you rather than print a blank field.

Do the standard switch and receptacle models come in retail boxes?

No individual retail box by default — twenty per inner carton and two hundred per master carton, without wall plate or instruction sheet. An individual box can be added as an OEM specification.

What happens if the carton marking is wrong?

The carton identity is what your receiving system books against, so a carton that does not name the exact model can put otherwise correct product on hold. That is why the pack description is agreed before the run instead of corrected after it.

Send the list, get the package back

Model list, quantities and project type is all we need to start. The quotation comes back in one business day with the specification sheet for each line item, the listing reference it holds and the packing detail for the DC — one document, not four.
