Standards, sampling, and the paperwork that leaves with the container
A certificate on a website proves very little. What matters is which standard applies to the model you are buying, how the units are tested while they are being built, and whether the documents you need arrive with the shipment or a month later.
The standard that applies to each family
Ask for the standard that covers your SKU, not the one that appears in the headline. Where a family has more than one applicable document, both are named.
| Product family | Standard | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| GFCI receptacles | UL 943 | Class A ground-fault circuit interrupters, including self-test requirements |
| USB wall outlets | UL 498 | Attachment plugs and receptacles, including the receptacle portion of combination devices |
| Duplex receptacles | UL 498 | Attachment plugs and receptacles, including TR and WR construction |
| Wall switches | UL 20 | General-use snap switches |
| Wall plates | UL 514D | Cover plates for wiring devices, where applicable |
Canada-bound orders carry cUL listing on the same families. Confirm the marking requirement for the destination province with your sales engineer before artwork is approved.
What is actually checked, and how often
ISO 9001 tells you a management system exists. It does not tell you what gets tested. These lines do.
- ISO 9001 management system covering production and inspection
- In-line electrical functional testing on every GFCI unit
- AQL sampling at visual inspection on receptacles and wall plates
- Final inspection before packing on every production run
- UL-required electrical testing on the applicable standard for the family
- Rejection handling and per-batch record retention — supplied with the quotation
The document set that ships with an order
This is the minimum set for distributor onboarding, project submittal and an AHJ question, without a second round of emails.
| Document | What it settles |
|---|---|
| UL Product iQ record | File number, applicant name, manufacturing location and the model designations the file covers |
| Product datasheet per SKU | Electrical ratings, wiring method and packaging specification |
| Marking and label artwork | Where the UL Mark sits and which TR, WR or self-test marking the standard requires |
| ISO 9001 certificate | Scope and validity dates |
| UL test reports | The applicable standard per family — UL 943, UL 498, UL 20 or UL 514D |
| Country-of-origin documentation | Customs and retailer onboarding |
| Packaging specification | UPC, contractor pack and retail-specific labelling |
Private-label and OEM orders add the marking, packaging artwork and barcode files issued under your brand, plus the Multiple Listing position on the manufacturer's file.
Four steps to check our listing without asking us
UL Product iQ is the official directory and the account is free. Here is the path, and what to look at when the record opens.
Create a free account in UL Product iQ and search for the manufacturer name on your quotation.
The record opens to the applicant company, the manufacturing location, the product category code and the model designations the file covers.
That the model designations include the SKU you were quoted, and that the manufacturing address matches your quotation and the country-of-origin marking.
If something does not line up, clear it before the purchase order — a series-level designation or a second manufacturing site can be perfectly normal, but it should be visible on the record.
Why you will not find a certificate image here
We do not print certificate images or file numbers on this website. A scanned certificate is easy to copy, impossible to keep current, and tells you less than the live record does.
The file number travels with your quotation, and you can check it yourself in UL Product iQ — that is the version that cannot go out of date. Along with the file number we supply the UL test report and the submittal sheets for the models on your order.
There is a separate reason for keeping images off the page: some of the older certificate files in circulation name a different company and a different city, and until that is cleared up in writing we would rather point you at the directory than publish a picture.
For an OEM or private-label program, the file number on the device is normally the manufacturer's, even when the brand on the carton is yours. Making your own company name searchable in the UL directory is done through Multiple Listing — your company is added as a Multiple Listee on our file, you file the application with UL, and we authorise it. The fee and the timeline belong to UL.
What buyers ask before they release a PO
How do I verify your UL certification independently?
UL and cUL listings are public in the UL Product iQ directory at iq.ulprospector.com. Enter the file number from your quotation to see the active certification, the scope and the covered standards. We also include the UL certificate and test reports with the shipment for every order.
Which processes happen in your own plant?
Injection moulding, PCB assembly, device assembly and calibration, UL-required electrical testing, and final QC and packing for the core wiring device lines. What stays outside is limited to raw material and component supply.
What documentation arrives with the goods?
UL certificate, UL test report, commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and product submittal sheets. Private-label orders add the mark, artwork and barcode files issued under your brand.
Can you host a factory audit or a third-party inspection?
Yes. Customer quality teams and third-party inspection companies such as SGS, BV and Intertek are hosted on site. Pre-shipment inspections, in-process QC audits and social compliance audits are booked through your sales engineer, and reports and corrective-action responses come back in standard B2B timeframes.
Does a missing certificate image mean the listing is invalid?
No — it means the certificate is not the evidence to rely on. The listing record is. Ask for the file number, check the model designations and the manufacturing address, and ask about the marking authorisation for TR, WR and self-test features on the SKU you are buying.
Quality figures we do not publish
Where we cannot publish a figure, it is supplied with the quotation rather than estimated here.
- ISO 9001 covers the management system; the certificate number and validity dates are supplied with the quotation.
The rest of the company section
Send the list, get the package back
Model list, quantities and project type is all we need to start. The quotation comes back in one business day with the specification sheet for each line item, the listing reference it holds and the packing detail for the DC — one document, not four.
